Message: The dash is exactly the same. Yes you could put in
the 5.9 but you'd need to replace the transmission,
PCM, and the wiring harness. Things like the power
steering pump, etc., are also different. If you
have a parts truck it can be done.
RT and SLT are just option packages, nothing
special.

Message: A 4.7 is the easiest. If you want the 3.9 or 5.9
you'll need to change the transmission too. The
wiring harnesses are different, you'll have some
modifications to the cluster - for the mechanical
PRNDL and of course a new PCM. You could put in the
5.2 - you'll have to find a PCM for it.
Anything can really be put in. It depends upon how
much you want to spend.

early of a year to work without to many headaches? Should I
use a closer year? It will fit but what wireing problems will I
encounter ? Being its AWD. Like I mentioned I do have the
whole truck so I can use the harness from the 96 . Any heads
up is appreciated. Thanks

Message: Shane,
The only engine that will give you the fewest
headaches is the 4.7. It is substantially
different from the 2.5, 3.9, and 5.9 which are the
only other engines that came with this truck.
The harnesses in the '96 are not compatible. '01
and up use what is called a PCI data bus, one
wire. Prior to that it was CCD, 2 wire. You
can't use the '96 computer either.
You also won't find a PCM to fit the truck. You'd
have to use one from a 5.9 but the fuel/timing
won't be optimum.
Then there is the transmission issue.
What's the problem with the 4.7?

Message: Problem with the4.7 is price, price, price. Everything seems to
be $2000 or more with the miles being over 100,000. Found
one for $150 with bad head gasket but then I priced the timing
set at orielly auto for 519.99 and head gasket set at 164.99.
Just ridiculous. And I read a lot about Pistons thru the block
and etc. motor I have has 140,000 with a rod knock. Granted I
got truck thru a barter that only cost me 350. Guess I just feel
better having A motor that isn't a sohc. Had explorer with same
timing and didn't have luck with that motor either. Maybe I just
need to stop buying crap off of Craigslist. LOL. I have roughly
a 1000 I can spend on a motor and whatever else needs to go
with it give or take a Hundo or two. Ya 4.7 would be great to
put back in making it a lot easier but just can't bear to pay that
much for an engine that I don't know what it's been thru. My
momma always said if it weren't for bad luck I wouldn't have
none at all. Lol. So if you can point me on another direction or
better yet a cheaper 4.7 I'd send ya a xmas card next
Christmas. I am at the moment without wheels and need a
speedy path to get on the road. Truck is in very nice condition.
And would like to keep but I'm honestly thinking of taking the
1500 I got offered and buying a neon or something so I can
have some wheels. Thanks for any input you have to offer me
to help me with y speedy recovery. HAVE 4.7 FOR CHEAP ?
WILL TRAVEL. LMAO

PRND? And what about the throttle body? Would I need to do
something with that? Any other problems I would need to deal
with changing it over to 5.2? I would like to do a 5.9. Same
issues with that as far as the 5.2? What exactly would I need
to do to change over to 5.9? Thanks

Message: If you want the 5.9 that would be the easiest
because it came in the '01 and the 5.2 did not.
You could use a 5.9 PCM with the 5.2 but the fuel
curves will be "off."
Your PCM has to be from '01 and up. Earlier
models used a different (non-compatible) computer
bus. You can't use the 4.7 PCM with any other
engine.
Use the throttle body off of the "new" engine.
You may need to change throttle/cruise control
cables.
PRNDL is electronic and based on the range sensor
in the transmission. It should not be an issue.
You will need to find an appropriate transmission
- you can't use the 45RFE (from the 4.7).
The front differential mounts are different on the
4.7. You will need wiring harnesses from a 5.9
truck.
If you had a parts truck it is doable.
Anything is doable, with time, effort, and money.

Message: The front end is different. That's a Dana front end in the '99 while your '01 uses a Dodge C205F. It should not be a big issue though.
You will still need to find a PCM, the one in the '99 won't work with your '01 truck. Again, try one from a 5.9.
Best case, you'd find an '01 parts truck with the 5.9.
