Subject: No spark from coil, But?
IP: Logged

Message:
OK Here we go,
Just changed the Cat and muffler and attempted to jump start the dead battery. The engine turned over but wouldn't start. I pulled the coil wire at the dist. and put a spark plug in that end. Then when I turned the key from off to the run position a spark jumped accross the plug. But when I turned the key to start the motor turned over but there was no spark being sent from the coil to the dist. So I went to the auto store and dropped $40.00 for a new coil, hooked it up, turned the key to run and same thing, Spark jumped accross the plug in the coil wire. The battery had to be hooked to a charger so I didn't attempt to start it yet. The spark being sent from the coil to dist. just by turning the key to run, not start but run has me questioning why. I can hear all the normal clicking when the key is turned to run but didn't know that a spark was sent even though the motor isn't being turned over. I thought the coil was bad so it was replaced. Should I be looking elsewhere for a problem? If so where should I start?

I did check for codes using the check engine light only. I received the 12 and 55 codes. I also thought that this the dreaded splice could be responsible but it appears to be fine. Should I consider resplicing it anyway?

OK, Rechecked the imfamous splice and decided to pull it apart and resplice 2 of the three that are in that bundle. One was the single red with white stripe into three red with white striped wires the other was the light blue with yellow stripe into two light blue with yellow stripe. Wrapped everything with electrical tape and resecured the fuse box to the firewall. Now once the battery is charged or someone shows up with a jump I'll know it that was the problem. Otherwise any other suggestions would be welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks again.

Turns out that the coil won't spark when the Computer goes bad. Who'd uh thunk it? Seems I didn't need a new coil after all. Good thing I had a computer out of my '94 that bolted right into place. Started right up and purrs like new. Thanks for lettin me share while I worked the problem out.
