Message: One morning the Dakota would not start...106,000 miles....turned over fine, smelled flooded...I purchased new plugs, wires, dist cap, rotor...it started right up, but as soon as it warmed up, it idled really rough, sometimes died.
Installed new IAC, new crankshaft position sensor, new O2 sensor...still the same thing....checked all other sensors , all ok...no trouble code (only 12 & 55)either by engine check light or reader ll I borrowed from parts store. Then one day it wouldn't start at all again. Smelled flooded...by now I have pulled all my hair out...I am asking for dynamite...
I pulled the battery out and put it in a different vehicle. Today I decided to put a new battery in the dodge...It started right up, warmed up and started idling bad again.
Checked all the grounds, thinking something is not getting enough power...all are ok now...
It starts every time... idles good until warm, and it seems to run high rpm ok...2000...
the new battery really seemed to help...
PLEASE HELP!

Message: I just went out to check for sparks/shorts in the dark & remembered something....when it does start running rough-it sounds as if it is 'gasping' for air...then when the gasping noise goes away the engine smooths out....maybe another clue in this mystery of the internal combustion engine...

Message: having a bad battery or disconnecting the power will reset your computer, resulting in it haveing to "relearn" all the different parameters for running. The idle will be noticeably affected, also. Not sure if the battery is the cause of all your probs, but if you know it is good and after a few hundred miles the truck still runs like that, then it is something else.

Message: As the truck is a 92 it could also be the #115 wire
splice starting to go south.

Message: Hi Tim,
Under the hood drivers side inner fender well.
Check to see if you have a black fuse\relay box.
If so post back and I'll walk you through it,
If memory serves me right it was 92-96 that had
the splice issues.
(I'll be checking back)

Message: Ya, I got the black fuse/relay....I cleaned & rebuilt the + & - from the alternator & battery - to the fuse box...I've been tugging gently on all wires while I'm cussing the truck....nothing seems to be it....I cleaned & re-lubed the computer plug....
I'm really leaning toward replacing the ERG system...after all, it's only money...but with the gasping for air and the fact that it mostly runs fine when cold, makes me think....
No hurry on a reply...I've been at this nearly a month....We may go snowmobiling this weekend

Message: EGR failure would cause a bad idle but not wet
plugs. So you have replaced the wire splice behind
the fuse box?
If no codes only other things that come to mind are
weak coil or crank sensor.

Message: No codes, only 12 & 55, which are normal....put in a new crank sensor...
Have not replaced or checked the splice behind the fuse box...I'll look at that right now and post back....today is one of those days it won't even start!

IT WAS THE COIL! I CHANGED IT OUT ON A WHIM AND IT RUNS GREAT....
