I have an 04 Dakota 4.7L V8 4x4. I was getting 11
mpg. I have replaced the stock cold air intake
with what K&N recommended. I have also switched
to Mobil 1 synthetic, iridium plugs, and put a can
of BG44k in the tank. I heard that going to a
muffler with less resistance would also help.
Since I have already put so much money into this
project and am hesitant to put more money into it,
could I just go with a straight pipe? I am still
on my first tank of gas so I do not know if any of
this has paid off yet. Any thoughts on muffler
verses straight pipe?

Proper alignment, tire inflation and size play a very important role in MPG.

I run the tires slightly over-inflated. They are
stock size and they are only an all-weather tread.
So without going to a "special" tire I think I am
about as good as I am going to get there. The plugs
I took out were still they original copper with
95,000 miles on them (there was basically no
electrode left). I am just not sure if I should
stick with the stock muffler, go to a high flow
muffler, or if straight pipe is better/acceptable.

Thanks to everyone that posted, all I wanted was a
little feedback on muffler vs no muffler. Your help
was extremely underwelming.

If that's all you wanted, go with a performance muffler. And you thread title should have been "Muffler or no muffler" not "4.7l fuel economy mods" if all you wanted was advice on a muffler.

Has anyone tried the IAT chip to improve fuel economy?

Hey dumbass, why don't you drop a carburated 2.2l in that piece of sh*t? You'll get the best gas mileage i'm a hundred percent positive on that one. Gets better mileage than a 4.7l

dakota123, you will NOT save mileage with a "chip". You could possibly with a programmer if there is one available for your vehicle. Other than that, proper tune, alignment, tire inflation and change of driving habits will be the only way.

With the modifications that I have made, and if I
keep my foot out of the accelerator, coast in
neutral to stop signs, etc... I can get really
close to 18 mpg city. But thats the best I have
managed the past several months. And to Daddio,
who posted 4 months ago that I am a dumbass, I do
not have the extra money to purchase a different
engine. And I prefer the 8 cylinder. I just
wanted to get as much out of it as possible.
Again Daddio, thanks for being so helpful. That
must be why your on here, to be nice to the new
guys.

I'm getting between 18 and 19 highway mpg out of my 2000 Dakota 4X4 Quad-Cab SLT. It is 100% bone a$$ stock. I have the stock size BF Goodrich A/T radials 10.5 X 31 tires on it.

Now for the caveat all this great mileage, I don't drive it over 60 miles per hour. If I drive 65, it gets 15. If I drive 70, it gets 13. Gas being the price it is, demands that I drive it slow :(

If your truck is still running on a clutch driven
fan to cool the engine I'd change to an electric
one. I did that on my 2003 dodge dakota Quad cab
with 4.7L engine and got much more power better
sound and better fuel economy. Good luck on saving
gas :)

Just bought a 2005 Dodge 4.7 I was toll to put a
cold injection on it. It would help with the
mileage I haven't had it long enough to figure out
what the mileage is or should be. I know it has
more power and uses a lot of gas I understand they
make poor gas mileage I hope that cold air
injection works
