Subject: Suction on fuel tank
IP: Logged

Message:
For awhile I`d been having problems starting the truck, 2000 QC 2wd Dakota 4.7 auto, after it sets for a while. I would have to turn the key off and on a few times to fill the fuel line before it would crank. I was thinking the check ball in the fuel line was stuck open allowing the fuel to drain back into the tank. I was also thinking maybe the injectors were leaking by too. But, the other day I went to get some gas and there was this huge amount of suction on the gas cap. Okay, I says, now I`m putting 2 and 2 together. Maybe MY vent line is stopped up or the cap is bad causing the pump to create a suction inside the tank therefore sucking all the fuel out of the line back into the tank after I shut it off. It has never thrown a code or anything either so there`s no telling how long this has been going on. So, my question is this, am I close in my diagnosis and if so what is the remedy such as do I have to pull the bed off to get to the vent line, etc ... ?
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Gas Cap

MAF/MAP sensor (if equipped)

(evap) Purge solenoid (if equipped)

Drove home today with the cap off and real soon the CEL came on and boy at the fumes when I got out of the truck. Ordered a purge valve and will replace the gas cap too. Will see what happens after this. Thanks.

Changed the Purge Solenoid and cap (again) today. We`ll see if it fixes the issue.

Still no fixie :( What would the MAP Sensor have to do with this, outta curiosity. Would be willing to try it but would like to know what its purpose is here and would hate blow that coin for nothing if it doesn`t do anything to help remedy this situation. Already $55 in the hole now for the cap & solenoid.
