Message: Just bought a used 1997 5.2 ext cab V8.. It runs very well. I've had some problems with the ABS light staying on. Well I took to a Dodge Dealer and they are charging 1300 because the Differental is shot. Is the common? will it happen again? Cost to much?
Thanks

Message: Not common unless it's a 5sp and the last owner liked to dump the clutch at 5000rpm.If you go with a good aftermarket set of gears and a lsd an indepenent shop can set you up with a better gear set for a bit less.Use red line gear lube when it goes back together.

Message: I've been doing a little research on differential gears.
The dealer quoted me about 1300-1400 to change my 355s for 392s. I have found after market gears and the required install kit for about $325.00. I have had some install quotes from non dealers from $300-$500.

Anyway, my 2000 4X4 has the 9 1/4 with 3.55 gears and the LSD...I have yet to be able to figure out Dodge's logic on which models get the 8 1/4 vs the 9 1/4.

Message: Starting in 2000, all V-8 Dakota's got the 9 1/4" carrier. No matter on gear ratios or other wise. I don't know if the V-6's still have the 8 1/4" carrier or not. 3.55's and 3.92's are available from the factory with Trac Lock or, as the window sticker says "Anti-Spin." They are also available in the "open" configuration, as well. Just ask Dr.Q. 3.21's are not available with the anti-spin option.
All Gen II trucks got the 8 1/4" rear, some Gen I's got the 7 1/4" rear (puny).

I was lucky enough to find a 4.7/5sp/3.92 (a deal had fallen through)in stock-so I was able to get $2500 in rebates. One of the saddest days is when I realized I didn't have an LSD. I mean who would order the 4.7/5sp/3.92 without the LSD! That's just not right!

Message: ACE,
Not all 3.55's are open, I have a 97 w/LSD (anti-spin for those who are new). The truck came with the tow pkg so I don't know if that is why or not. This summer I hanged out the gears to 3.73 LSD. I just wish ARB made an air locker for the diffs.

Message: Dr Q,
I am besmirching the fact that you have the consummate drag racing rear, cept for one ting, Lucy.... the left-a tire, she no a-spin! Oohhhhh Luuuuucie!
Heh. It's kinda funny to hear all your traction woes, but there are ways. I once saw a guy show up at the track with a slick on only the right rear. Guess he was saving money, eh?
I can't imagine why there's even an open-rear option with the 3.92. If I'm hauling a trailer, etc, I'd definitely want a 3.92 posi to get it out of the loose stuff.

Message: Bryan,
A posi is a limited slip. GM calls it posi and DamlerChry calls it limited slip. Same same. They are the same in every way, except for the old versions. In the old vehicles, they had 'clutch packs', but newer ones don't. You should leave 2 drag marks from an LSD. The only other gearing is a locker, but those you chirp the inside tire while cornering under power.

Message: iirc, most of the differences are the individual manufacturers giving different marketing names. Limited slip and anti spin are just general names that can even be given to lockers. Basically posi has come to mean the same as limited slip, just as ordering a coke might get you a pepsi. The point gets across.
Lockers, Auburn, and Gearodisk are referring to specific styles. The latter being a new style that dodge came up with, don't ask me where exactly it's used.

Message: Its interesting to read that Dr. Q's 3.92 rear doesn't have the LSD. I have always heard, and read that the 3.92 gear option was not available with out the LSD, at least in previous years.
I can say from experience, you can get a complete rear, case, housing, gears, & LSD, already setup and ready to bolt in for $1100 right from the dealer. The only thing you'd need to do is install your axles, backing plates, and speed sensor and your ready to go. However, if your case and housing are still good, which it Should be ;), aftermarket gears, and some sort of locker is a much better option for ALL OUT racing. I would guess the cost would be more. The factory LSD is not bad for street use, and moderate strip action. Mine made it through about 130 mega clutch dumps with slicks before exploding the spider gear set. The Spider gears are the weakest link, eliminating the spider gears with a locker unit would be a major upgrade of the factory rear, and does'nt require the ring gear to be removed and set back up. saving you $$.
Alex, I think the 9 1/4 was available in 98 with the 318. Wayne Swanson has a '98 RC 318 5spd that has a 9 1/4 rear.

Message: They prolly were available w/ 9.25" axles after the body style change. The old Gen II shop manual that I have only has chapters for the 7 1/4", and the 8 1/4" and maybe the 9 1/4." I think the 9 1/4" rears were only applicable on the 4x4 versions. I'll have to check.
BTW, Matt- bolted on the Dynomax kit. Lost all the power I had with the TB. I almost cried. Then I reset the PCM...... heh. The power's ALL still there, but now it makes a big ol' rumbly sound, too. HeeHee. I am REALLY going to have to get to the track SOON.........

Message: I think you're right Alex, Gen III's have the 9 1/4, at least 98 up, not sure about the 2x4 97's?? matter of fact, I think the 9 1/4 (Dakota)came out in '98 after the birth of the RT, I don't think it was available in '97... someone correct me if I'm wrong....
I bet that Dynomax sounds sweet, they sound better and better the older they get!! Catbacks don't offer any power though, thats the only bad part! The Sound is worth every penny though!
