Subject: Drive train Whine Front CV? IP: Logged
Message: '00 dakota 4.7 with 80K miles on it.. Last year I did both rear 'U' joints. Lately I hear a bit of a whine.. can't tell front or back. Question is. With 80K miles on this car, should I expect that the Front axle CV joints might be whining or should I look elsewhere? I haven't gotten off the ground and run it yet. just looking for advanced help

Message: bad whine......... tires wearing unevenly? or bad wheel bearing? If your cv joints were going out, it sound more like a clicking sound.

Message: Makes sense, yeah, CV's click. According to my dad, turning while driving made noise changes but no big changes. I'm betting Hub assemblies. 80K/11 years.. probably bearings.
OK anyone know the torque for the Center Axle Nut? Dads truck, I want to be prepared when I get over there to listen for myself what's going on.

Message: Swapped out the two Hub assemblies 2000 dakota 4WD.
The center Axle Nut was 1-1/4" and the three bolts to remove the hub were 9/16" not metric.
10mm wrench was needed to loosen and move the small dust shield to snake the ABS wire through.
It was a three hour job to do both sides.
Slide hammer is key to get Hub out of Knuckle
