Subject: Rear axle swap IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 dodge dakota sport with a 318. I was wanting to find out if a 2005 rear axle would fit under it. I want to replace my rear axle and if I am going to do it I might as well get one with disk brakes.
If it does fit will I have to change the master cylinder also?

Message: Why don't you use an axle from an '03? I should be a direct swap and will have disc brakes as well.

Message: It won't be an exact swap. I just did a 2002 9.25" into my '96. Spring perches line up perfectly, but had to shorten the drive-shaft by 2". Not to mention I have to rewire the ABS speed sensor on the axle. That was nothing compared to having to find the drive-shaft flange and the proper U-joint to match.
If you need some more info, please ask away.

Message: a direct swap would be from a 03 to a 97
96s are different
1990 sport RC SB, 1995 318drivetrain, 3.92 gears (came with truck) Powertrax "traction system", 95 dash/steering wheel, hearthrob exhaust, headers, cutout after y-pipe, necessary electric fan add-a-leafs, 30x9.5 mud tires, cranked T-bars, AR 39 15x8 rims, grill guard, roll bars

Message: I'm sure going from 8.25" to 9.25" would also require a couple of modifications.

Message: That 9.25" is heavier too. About 75lbs I think. The 8.25" I could carry myself, but not the 9.25" Also the 9.25" has 11" drums vs 9".

Message: My 8.25" has 11" drums. But mine is a QC. 11" drums were std equipment on it.

Message: That's my main goal to go from a 8.25 to a 9.25. But I don't
think I want to hassle with shorting the drive line. Would I
have to do that on a 97? Thanks for the help
