Subject: 04 Dakata 4.7 rev problem IP: Logged
Message: Driving down the interstate at 65mph, been driving for about 3 hours non-stop. All of a sudden my rpm starts fluctating between 1400 and 2000. My speed didn't change. Still chugging along like it was. I was not using cruise control because I was in a rain storm. My first thought was that i was losing traction. This continued intermittantly for about 45 minutes.
The next morning I started my truck, and while it was still in PARK, the rpm's again started fluctuating up & down. No throttle was applied.
Any ideas of what could be causing this?

Message: does the engine physically change speed or is it just the tachometer? you would see a speed change if the engine was actually doing that. I would say you have a connection problem or a bad gauge.

Message: Yes, the engine was revving up. It wasn't just the tach. My wife even noticed that the engine was revving!

Message: it sounds a little to me like maybe the torque converter was unlocking and locking when it wasnt supposed to, not sure what would cause that.

Message: My '03 did this a couple of years ago....your TPS may need to be replaced. Easy 10 minute job, get the TPS at Autozone....about $25 cheaper than Mopar & has a 2 year warranty as opposed to Mopar's 1 year/
