Subject: valve lash adjusters? cost to replace?
IP: Logged

Message:
I started getting a ticking coming from under the passenger side engine side. When i start the truck and when i give it gas i hear a click click click. From the info i got from here i assume it is the hydrolic valve lifters. I am new with American Dodge trucks came from a Honda civic. So please treat me as I am a NOOB at dodge dakotas. Thank you.

It is a 2001 dodge dakota quad cab 4.7 130,000 miles

How much is reasonable to get this fixed by a mechanic and or is it a easy fix that a noob can do. I did my brakes and tie rods.

Do I just need the adjusters and valve cover gaskets? do i just replace the bad one or all of them. how many 16 or 32?

I hear some say about not taking the cam out and others saying to take it out. which is easier and less time consuming.

Thanks for the help.

If it only ticks for a little at start up i would leave it alone. The lash adjusters are not that hard to replace but without the special tool to compress the valve springs you would need to loosen the cam retaining bolts. And of course you would NOT want to un bolt the cam sproket. you would also want to use a cam wedge to hold the chains from moving and mark the chain and gear before attempting any thing. timing on these is very hard to get back if you mess it up and requires removing the timing cover and entire set of timing components (3 chains) and special tools.

the lash adjusters are not that hard to replace if careful though.

Thanks 02dak4.7 Just began and just new to this. Some mentioned maybe lighting up the oil from 10-30 to 5-30 could this help? What about Marvel Mystery Oil use one time to clear some deposits then do the oil change.? Appreciate the help.

I would definetely go to 5w-30 since thats the recommended oil for the 4.7. cleaning deposits out of the engine will always help but not eliminate your ticking. I get it and I just rebuilt my heads and put them on, but kept the original lash adjusters with 105k on em. It goes away once the oil gets up there within a minute. as long as its not excessive and it goes away, I would just leave it alone, but before your next oil change throw a quart of ATF in the oil and let it idle for 20 - 30 min, should help pull out some of those deposits.
