My 2000 2wd QC turned 190000 today. Body no rust at all, frame a little, interior perfect.

But it is not all good. I've had a transmission issue for a while now. When I would leave it sit particularly in winter, it would not want to go in Drive just after start-up. I had heard the torque converters could leak down, so letting it first idle in neutral generally would help.

But now generally at my first stoplight, the transmission drags down when shifting to the low gear coming to a light and when holding brake it will generally idle down and die. I've tried to run the AC to keep idle speed up and not let it die, but that doesn't always work. After warmed up it is fine (AC on or off). I also noticed a burnt smell and today noticed a little smoke or something after restart. Upon inspection tonight all I see is some evidence of valve cover gasket leaking a little on both sides, more so on drivers side. But the bigger item is I noticed auto trans fluid on the motor under the dipstick / filler tube down on the fuel rail pooled in pockets on intake manifold. Either it has been there a very long time (spilled when filled) or it has puked up fluid out the filler tube possibly when it died?

I don't know much about auto trans (45rfe I think), do you think it is transmission or torque coverter? How hard are they to change out? Trans fluid level was perfect (hot - right between the holes), not burnt or anything. I've changed fluid and filters several times through life of vehicle.

Well I googled for this issue and found a thread with the exact same issues. Not moving forward when put in Drive (when cold) and stalling at stop light when cold. Seems he fixed the issue by using only Chrysler transmission filters, the aftermarket ones seal was not tight enough and allowed air in. I guess it is time for auto trans drain and filter change and see if that fixes it.
