Subject: Overdrive problem
IP: Logged

Message:
Once again I find myself at the mercy of the dakota.com experts. This time my problem involves the a518 transmission automatic overdrive. My 1993 just past the 200,000 mile mark and I noticed that the overdrive doesnt't seem to be working at all. Normally the overdrive would be on during normal driving until I depressed the O/D button on the dash to disingage it and turn the normal 4 gear trans into a 3 gear auto for towing and climbing hills. But my truck will not shift into 4th at all. Trans fluid was low so I topped it off with the atf+4 fluid and it still isn't functioning. Is there a vacuume line or switch of some sort that could be stuck? when I push the O/D button it still lights up as it always has but there is no change in the way the transmission responds and when I push it again the light goes out but the transmission still will not shift out of third. Is it finally time for that ever expensive transmission overhaul?

Does this have anything to do with the cruise control? seems like the cruise control stopped working at about the same time. It was fully functional before and now that I'm stuck driving a 3 speed automatic it won't engage either.

I would check all of your fuses and relays. the overdrive unit on the A518 is electronic and will not engage if you have an electrical problem. this could also be a reason for the cruise control. I would check the fuses and then if that isn't it, find the correct relay and swap with one you know works. Beyond that i would check the electrical connection on the transmission, i think it may be toward the back of the tranny.

It sounds like a speed sensor has failed. Check the
one on the transmission. I think it'll solve both
problems.

02dak4.7 and Dan00Dak,
It's guys like you that make this the only place i've found to get solutions to these little problems. I don't know if this is going to fix the problem or not. I'm going to check these two things out and I'll let you know the outcome. I hope my problem isn't more than the speed sensor or a blown fuse cause right now a transmission is way at the bottom of my long list of things I need to spend my money on. Keepin my fingers crossed, I'll let you know.
Thanks for the help

My 2001 Dakota down shift out of over drive very roughly. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the regular shifting of the transmission only when slowing down and the overdrive kicking out. I t make a loud noise.

sorry.
I have a 1991 Dodge Dakoda 5.2ltr automatic.

The button on the dash lights up but nothing happens when I push it.
it will light and go out when pressed again.

It is like it's in third gear.
My gas mileage is down to 9-10 mpg.

I checked the wires to make sure they
are plugged in and I changed the speed sensor.

I found this site and it is very
Interesting what components do beyond there obvious Propose.

Who would have guessed the Coolant temp sensor
could cause the truck/car not to go into O/D

My 2001 Dakota 4.7L 2wd will not shift into O/D until the motor warms up... I've done a trans flush, but it hasn't helped. It has 140K miles on it and I know that the last time the trans filter was changed was around 80Kmiles.... Could it just be a fuse or a relay as you all have stated before? Could it be the filter? or could it just be worn out? lol I haven't a clue...

I finally fixed my O/D Problem

After changing just about everything
that could have caused the O/D not to work,

I read where the computer could be the problem
and it described every other problem I was
having.

I changed the Computer and Presto the O/D works again. and the blue smoke and slight miss and a few other problems went away.

First of all that kind of language is not
necessary.

Also if you had a bad experience with a 318
engine then so be it.

I DID fix my problem with a new Computer.
weather or not you want to believe it.

You do not need to reply if you disagree.

if you can not be nice then quit coming
to the forums.

We are here to help each other NOT call
names and blame some one for Lying.
