I just bought a 02 Dakota QC with the 4.7L engine from a individual the other day. I was figuring on around 12-14 MPG as an average for this vehicle. When I picked it up it had a 1/4 tank of gas and I drove probably 40-50 miles on it before the gas light came on. In my other 02 Dakota the last 1/2 tank always seemed to go fast so i didnt pay it any attention. I filled it up for around $68.00 or 20 Gal. I drove it to work and back and to town once and averaged around 6 MPG. The truck runs fine Idles fine but does shift kind of wierd. Its like it takes higher RPMs for it to shift with the over drive turned on but not with it turned off. When stopped and idleing with the windows down you can smell a very stout exhaust smell. There is a Check engine light on but he said it was on when he got the truck and the guy told him it was a speed sensor. The truck does have 32X11.5X15 tires but it shouldn't cuase it to be that bad of MPG. Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Pull the codes.

You could have a bad 02 sensor, that'd drop the
mileage right down. Could have a bad speed sensor
too.

Start with fixing the CEL.

I would also check the tire psi, change the plugs, pcv valve, and air filter too.
