Subject: Leaking oil filter IP: Logged
Message: I just did the first oil change on my 2002 Dak 4.7.
The original factory oil filter was on very tight and it took a lot of work to get it off. When I installed the new filter I placed a bead of oil on the rubber filter gasket and made sure the sealing surface on the block was clean. I tightened the new filter as per instructions 3/4 to 1 turn past first contact of the seal on the block. A couple days later I noticed some oil hanging on the bottom of the filter and a slight trail of oil down the side of the filter. I replaced the filter with a new one and tightened just a little more and I still notice some oil seaping down the side of the filter. My question is how tight do you need to tighten the filter to keep it from leaking?
And by the way I checked all around and above the filter at the oil sended unit and everything is dry so it has to be the filter. could there be something else causing the leak ?

Message: that's too much Nicholas, if your talking a comlete 360 turn after hand tight.
Mig, I always tightened mine as tight as I could by hand, no leaks.

Message: Take it back to the dealer and make sure nothing is damaged. By the way, what filter are you using?

Message: I'm sure you did, but I must ask. Did you make sure the old gasket came off with the factory filter when removed from the engine.

Message: Hand tighten to just about as tight as you can get it. Never use a wrench to tighten it on - that's not necessary.
Check the mating surface to make sure it's not gouged or nicked.

Message: This happened to me a couple of oil changes ago. If you lube the rubber gasket with too much oil, it will get swueezed out when it comes in contact with the block. I just wiped the filter clean and checked it every day for the next week and no sign of any more oil. Now I make sure that I use a very thin coat of oil on the gasket and I have never had a problem.
