so I believe my 4.7L motor is shot in my 01 Dakota. Can I drop an 08 4.7 In its place just because i here much better stories about the 08.

Yep. The engine will drop right in.
There is however, the little matter of electronic throttle control on the '08. Also, the Transmission Control Module is incorporated in the engine computer starting in '03/'04. Will require new engine/transmission wiring harnesses. Will require new Powertrain Control Module (engine computer).
Also, your existing transmission will not work, requiring you to acquire a 5-45RFE transmission, which is what the computer expects to be connect to.

Just saw you had '01, so you might have the correct transmission already.
