 Subject: Rear axle Identification

I know its somewhere in these 300+ pages but I can't find it. Do any of you know how to tell the difference between a 8 1/2 rear axle and a 7 1/2 when one is missing the little tab thats supposed to be attached to the diff? I want to put the 3.9 rearend off my 94 Dakota into this 93. I may end up swapping the front axle just to be sure they are compatible.The 93 is missing the tab so I don't know if it has the 3.9 or not but I'm pretty sure most of the older trucks didn't come with the bigger rear axle.

Jeff, do you mean axle ratio or size?
Depending on the year, look on the inside of the glove box lid. It should have axle type and gear ratio.
