Subject: proper PCV valve function

hello
i have a 2001 5.9 and was curious if someone can explain or tell me how to tell if my pcv valve is faulty?
when i pull it out of grommet , while engine running it has alot of suction???

If it rattles and you have suction it is working.

yep, the rattle is the trick. It is a check valve that let's gas flow one way. Sometimes I'll spray a little cleaner inside also.

so while engine idles it should have suction?
when does it shut .....seems it would suck oil out ??????

It just maintains a slight negative pressure on the crankcase, which removes oil vapor and exhaust gases that are sent back to the intake manifold to be reburned. Not enough vacuum to suck out oil though.
