Good weekend all,

Does anyone know if the 2000 4x4 has front wheel bearings, and if they need to be inspected or lubricated?

Still trying to diagnose my drop from 13 to 10 mpg in recent months.

Thanks!

Jerry, Yes 4X4's have front bearings. They are a pretty involved job and I would'nt recomend anyone trying to figure it out in the driveway without some experience. There are knuckles to be seperated, half shafts to be removed, and then the bearing unit. Its not as involved as say, an early 90's Ram with a straight axle, but they need to be serviced. Go to your parts store and buy a Haynes manual at least, about fifteen bucks. Read and study. If you dont have the tools or don't think you can pull it off it's better to go to a reputable garage to have it done. You don't want a wheel coming off when your on the road. You can do a quick check by jacking the front tires one at a time (leave the lug nuts tight) and grabbing them at top and bottom and trying to wiggle them up and down by pulling on the top and bottom of the tire alternately. Pull hard but dont try and pull it off the jack. If you feel, see, hear ANY movement something is wrong.

More probable cause of drop in mpg would be O2 sensors ,air filter ,pcv valve, plugs ..
Or fuel , ethanol mixed fuel gives lower mpg
unless engine is modified for use ( retimed ) .

Thanks for the info guys.

Cleaned the pcv valve, which rattles when shaken. Changed the air filter and the plugs only have 8k on them. Engine runs good with no codes, so replacing o2 sensors is expensive and probably not worth the $$$.
