My 2002 dakota has 265 70r 16 tires. My question is, can I put a thinner tire on these rims? What sizes could I go to? Im am looking for thinner, not shorter.

To a certain point. How narrow do you want to go?
245/75/16 is almost exactly the same diameter as your current tire just a little narrower.
