I just got my 2001 Dakota, and it didn't come with an owners
manual. How do you properly shift in and out of 2Hi, 4Hi, and
4Lo? Do I need to go in reverse to unlock the hubs?

I put my 2000 4.7 liter in 4WD once in a while, never usually 4 low. No need to go in reverse, just shift in and out of 4 WD and 2 WD, even while driving slow if you prefer. You should look on Ebay and pick up a manual.
