Subject: Engine cuts out at high RPM?? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 Dakota Sport that I swapped a 5.9 out of a 95 Dodge Ram into. It has been running fine but all of a sudden it starts to sputter and backfire at higher RPM's. It idles just fine but every time at that certain RPM it starts to cut out. Just changed the fuel pump and replaced the intake gasket set. Kinda lost.....

Message: Let me guess, when you hit the gas wide open around 3.5-4k rpm the engine cuts off and you get a big back fire after you let off and the engine starts to run normal again? If so then its the crank position sensor on the back of the block just below the distributor on the pass side. its either loose or the mounting tab is broke. Replace or tighten the bolts and the problem will go away. (allen style socket)

Message: Ok so I replaced the crank sensor and it still does the same thing. My mechanic friend came over with his lab scope and the signal from the crank sensor is eratic. It is brand new as was the last one I changed. Kinda lost.

Message: Checked and even replaced the PCM. Cam shaft sensor is sending out a perfect signal but the crank looks like EKG from a heart attack victim. I am pretty lost because the only things I could think to make it erratic are the flywheel getting warped, grounding out or the cam sensor. Anyone out there ever have this before???

Message: My 2005 cuts out @ 4000 rpm everytime.
I was told it's a factory set rev-limiter.
Annoying is all.

Now THAT is the silliest thing. Somebody's been hitting the sauce a bit too much.
