Subject: 2000 4.7 Dakota overheating while towing IP: Logged
Message: My 2000 Dakota V8 4.7 overheats when I'm towing my boat. This truck has the towing package. Not sure how much the boat weights.. It's an 18 foot fiberglass "run about". You've probably seen hundreds of these kinds of boats out on the road. I figure the truck should be able to handle this.
When I'm not towing.. the temperature gauge needle is right at the half way mark.. or perhaps a needle's width below. Pretty much the same in the dead of winter as well as those 90 degree August days (I live in New England)
Here's the kicker... the truck runs hot when I'm towing on the highway.. going 55-65 mph. If I pull off the road.. and let the engine just idle.. the temperature goes back down to normal. Also.. towing at about 35-40 mph the truck doesn't overheat as much.
The fan clutch is about a year old.. the electric fan seems to come on when it's supposed to. Truck never overheats if I'm not towing.
I'm thinking it's the radiator.
Any suggestions out there? Also, does anybody have any experience with higher performance radiators? (2 core -vs- 3 core) etc?

Message: Make sure the electric fan is working, also flush
the system, new coolant & new T-Stat.
