 Subject: clanking noise

I have a 1995 dodge dakota 5.2 4x4. When i accelerate and let off the gas there is a loud clanking noise and the rpm drops to idle speed. The 4x4 also makes a similar noise continuously when engaged. Any suggestions?

Its coming from the front end. I think the u joints are causing the 4wd to make the sound but i dont understand why its doing in just regular driving.
