Subject: 5.2 Wont start IP: Logged
Message: My Dakota wont start, the other day I had plugs and wires put on it as well as a new battery. Driving down the road and she up and dies on me. I did the usual try and get her restarted but with no success. Now she has sat for two days "drying" because i figured she was flooded and i could smell gas. Well this morning the third day she still wont start, any ideas. Maybe something with the fuel air mixture? I have not the slightest idea.

Message: Check for codes. Judging by your first post you've got fuel but no spark. Check the coil for fire. If it fires then check the plugs for fire.

Message: check the ignition coil and distributor wires for spark, and use a volt-meter, you may not have a hot enough spark for ignition

Message: Try taking the under hood fuse box off the inner fender, and taking the plastic cover off some off the harness, check for a broken wire... its a red with a white stripe on the early 90's dak's , its actually a 2 or 3 into 1 splice that corodes and fails, very common in most early daks... try that

Message: turned out to be the ignition coil, well now i have the issue of the oil pressure dropping as the engine warms up. When i stop at a stop light the oil pressure bottoms out to nothing. I had the sending unit replaced, the mechanic says that it is typical for these trucks to build up sludge in the oil pan and that would cause the drop in pressure. Does this sound right to you guys? He also mentioned he wanted 350 bucks to pull the pan and clean it out.

Message: Tireburner, the wire splice problem is on the Gen IIs, his is a 97.
Trauma, do an oil and filter change, you may have a bad filter causing the pressure to drop.
And I've never heard of the engines sludging up.
The 318s have been made since 67 and have to be one of the most dependable engines made.
If it was sludged up it would NEVER have pressure.
And you may have a bad sender-yes, I know it's new, but I have bought bad new ones.
Did you have this problem before the engine quit?

Message: How many miles on it? How many miles did it have on it when you bought? If it wasn't maintained properly you could have some premature main or cam bearing wear which will cause a drop in pressure as the enigne gets to normal operating temp. What weight oil are you using?

Message: Try using a straight 30w oil and see what happens to the oil pressure. You may be surprised.
