Subject: Unidentified clicking, please help!

When I am braking and I slow to between 8 and 3 mph there is a distinct clicking or ticking sound coming from the rear (back) of my truck (2004 Dakota 4x4). It sometimes does it a little when I accelerate again but goes away quickly.

I can't get back there under those conditions to pinpoint it and not being able to figure it out is killing me, aside from riding on a creeper underneath while someone drives it I am kind of stuck. Questions and ideas are very welcome. Here's hoping you guys have fixed this before...

I fairly recently replaced my wheel speed sensor in the diff. When I removed the old sensor I saw that it had physically broken and the bottom of it got ripped off by the gears. I popped the cover and cleaned out the differential. The gears looked undamaged and the new sensor seems to be working now. If that helps anyone out.

Thanks very much in advance.

Good news for me, I figured it out.

I jacked the back of the truck up and ran it to simulate the conditions and found out it was definitely coming from the passenger side rear wheel. I pulled the wheel and the caliper.

When I pulled the rotor BOTH brake linings from the shoes for the emergency brake fell on the ground. I guess they were loosely rattling around inside and occationally sitting just right to make that unsettling ticking/tapping noise. After a $49.99 trip to Autozone I had two sets of replacement shoes and it hasn't done it since (a little over a week now, I wanted to be sure before I posted).

There was hardly any wear on the linings and I have no idea why they came off the shoes. I guess I am just lucky it didn't lock up on me.

Thanks to everyone who looked at my post and thought about it, especially Mark who threw an idea my way. I know I didn't give everybody much to go on. Thanks again.
