I have a 93 Dakota 4x4 with 5.2 and auto. More often than not it keeps dying while I am starting out or driving around under 35mph. If I try and give it gas as it is sometimes "sputtering" and trying to stay going, it wants to die even more. If I pop it into neutral, it will start righ away and sometimes it will start back up on its own before I put it out of gear. I changed the cap/rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc less than 10,000 miles ago. What could it be?

Awhile I cleaned the IAC plunger and may have twisted it a bit. Could that be the problem? How much do they cost?

I wouldn't worry about twisting it as long as it wasn't excessive. I have to get more sleep I answered your question on both boards.

Change the pick-up coil in your distributor, I guarantee you your 318 will live again. Yours truly, Personal experience. P.S. Let me know how you make out.

Where on the distributer is the pick-up coil? Did you notice any power improvements?

The pick-up coil is underneath the rotor, it's a little black donut looking thing about 1/4" thick with 2 wires and a plug at the end. I went through exactly what you are discribing with the stalling. I'd be driving along and all of a sudden the tach would drop to 0 and the engine would cut out. As you said I would put it in neutral and it would fire right back up. Sometimes I would go 2 days without a problem and other times it would happen a dozen times a day. And as you said sometimes it would cut out and back to running before Icould even react(this would usually occur at higher speeds). 2 months of headaches and about 3 garages later this 1 mechanic told me he was sure it was the pick-up coil, $42.95 canadian. In a final act of desperation I changed it. problem solved. I did some reading up on this because what was throwing everyone for a loop was that when the cut out would occur there would be no spark and no fuel. I found out that the reason is that your pick-up coil feeds your computer a tach reading. when the pick-up coil cuts the tach the computer shuts down both the fuel system and ignition. Hope this helps. Peace.

I cant get my Dakota to run right. I just put a new cam in it. I think it something to do with the computer being dumb and it not being able to adjust the timing. Does anybody have a solution.

It is a 93 5.2 318
