Subject: 99 Dakota - Drive Belt Problems IP: Logged
Message: Stupid me to begin with. Hadn't checked oil level in some time or the condition of my serpentine belt.
I was driving yesterday about a mile from home when I heard a terrible screech, then a snap, then a cloud of smoke in the rear view. Lost power steering, etc from the drive belt snapping. Drove it back home about a mile, no check engine light or anything, it actually seemed to drive OK and sounded OK. I didn't have the instinct to check the temp gauge, but I'm sure it got warm. Anyway, got it home, saw the shredded belt, went out to get a new one, got it installed, filled up oil. Had to jump it to get it started, a little bit of a whining noise was present, no knocking or anything and some smoking was happening (it almost looked like it was coming out of the air intake). turned it off and the new belt was almost torn in half in one spot... Any ideas? Did i totally screw the engine? It seemed like it was running OK, but like I said, some smoke was present. Not sure why the second belt was torn so quick. Thanks.

Message: Sounds like a pulley froze up on you. Check that your pulleys will rotate by hand. Alternator, water pump, idler, tensioner, power steering, and AC should turn by hand, obviously crank pulley will not. Then check for a damaged pulley. My bet is the tensioner or idler siezed up on you.

Message: Thanks for the info, I think I've got it nailed down to the water pump. There is antifreeze leaking as well.

Message: If you're changing the waterpump, don't forget a new thermostat and you may also want to change that little bypass hose while you're at it.
