 Subject: Malfunction Indicator Light

The malfunction indicator light came on in my Dakota this morning. It's a 2005, 4wd, with the 4.7L engine. Any suggestions as to what might cause this. I've not noticed any decline or change in performance but all the same the light is on. Thanks for any help you might be able to give.

Need to get the 'code' .
Turn ignition key to 'on' back to 'off'
three time then see code in the odometer
reading .
May show more than one of these and will end with Pdone .

Thanks, I tried that and it didn't display a code so I went to Advance Auto and they got it for me. It showed EGR sensor. The guy said it was important to get that checked because it affects timing, etc. Any input on this?
