 Subject: How can I lift the engine?

I have a '97 2WD 5.2 and was planning on tackling my rear main
seal sometime soon. I understand the procedures, however is
there any way to raise the engine a few inches to make clearance
for the oil pan to come off? I've heard of a way that you can take
the mount bolts of the engine out, raise the engine slightly with
a floor jack, put the bolts back on the mounts on the frame,
then lower the engine onto the bolts that are on the mounts? I
wasn't sure about this method or if anyone has heard of it. Any
other ideas would be great too, as I don't have a hoist to
physically lift up the engine.
