Message: Well, that depends on quite a few things. You didn't really give enough detail about your vehicle, or the exact v8 you're aiming at.
If your tranny is an a500/a518, or 42rh/e and 46rh/e (respectively) as I think they're called at that year (actually, I think they're 4xre's, being with the new JTEC computer and etc), then yes, but still which transmission depends on which engine.
If you're going for a stock-style 318, then an a500/42re will be able to handle it with no problem. But in that note, I highly suggest an a518/46re, as it can hold it's own against a ton of torque.
But, if you do-up the 318, have a stock 360, or do-up the 360, you're going to want the a518/46re, as the greatly sized amount of torque will tear apart the a500/42re.
If its an external balance 360, you need to have/make a properly weighted torque converter to help balance the rotating assembly. Or, you could spend the extra money and skip that part, and have an internally balanced 360 (that's my personal choice; revvs alot nicer and the crankshaft doesn't go through near as bad of a 'flex' at higher RPMs. A real gem for longevity).
You'll also need the correct ECU and wiring harness, along with maybe a fuel pump.
And I'm pretty sure new motor mounts, as I THINK the v6/v8 mounts are different. Never played around with the v6's, so I don't know for certain.
But, in any case, what type of v8 are you planning? Are you just going stock, or are you going to build a power house? Or somewhere inbetween? And external or internal balance? Be as intimate with the details as possible, makes us helping you alot easier and understandable - on everyone's parts.
It's a fair amount of work, but rewarding.

Message: Oh yea, there should be a sticker in your engine bay... somewhere. Some are on the (inside of the) hood, some are on the ledge at the front that 'covers up' the radiator.
Look around for it, it'll tell you what your vehicle came with from the factory. Transmission, rear end, one or two color paint, etc. Otherwise you'll end up having to crawl under the truck to copy down the serial number off the side of the transmission and look up what model it is.

Message: Yep, just hope its a stock 318 you're talking about, as the 360 is a different horse.

Message: I have done this 3.9V6 to 5.9V8 swap as well as a 5.2 to 5.9. Chris is right about your trans the 42RE which came with the V6's will not handle a 5.9L but should handle a stock 5.2 okay. The motor mounts are the same V6 to V8 and the trans will bolt up fine. TB cable will be different and your heater core hoses will be too short but those are cheap. You will need to add 2 wires into your harness and get a V8 PCM of comparable year (B&G can help with this). The fuel pump, alternator, PS pump, coil, will work from V6 to V8.

Message: I just did the swap , I pulled a 318 from a 95 2wd dakota, and swapped it in my 93 4x4 dakota that had a 3.9, Everything bolted up , except for a few small problems, my 93 had the fuel pressure regulator on top the engine, the 95 318 has it in the fuel tank, I had to swap it in, I also had to change throttle cables , And now my overdrive wont work, because the wireing connectors do not match. Does anyone know if I can cut the connector off the 3.9 that plugs in the overdrive and splice it to the 95 318 harness and plug it in to overdrive?

Message: I just swapped the motor in my 1995 dakota 4x4 with a stock
360! The truck came with a 318 and I needed to replace the
intake dome since the 360 didnt have the same vacum hose
outlets and the oil pan and pickup needed to be swapped
from the 318. The heads are the same and the best way is to
get a flexplate to the 360 since they are balanced and use the
318 torque converter ( not balanced ) Put headers on the 360
motor for the 360 and basically good to go!

Message: Despite running my stock Shelby Dakota within an inch if it's
life, the front three on the A500 did fine. It was the flippin
overdrive that burned up 7!!! times. The overdrive units are
the same on the 500/518 and their newer versions. The A500
can deal with a hot street 360, no problem. The 518 will
handle higher torque for longer periods between overhaul but
your Key to a reasonable lifespan on the 43 is in having a
good aftermarket transmission cooler, installing a TranGo
shift kit, and NO full throttle neutral drops in the parking lot.
