Message: i drive a 2000 dodge dakota 4x4 4.7 with 190000. i've been dealing with this over heating issue since i got my motor rebuilt and i've taken it back to the mechanic for him to try and fix it and the overheating problem keeps coming back.. the truck will over heat when idleing but if you raise the rpm's to about 3 or 4 it will gradually cool down. It will also spit out coolant out of the overflow tube located next to the cap where you add coolant when you take 20+ minute trips. like i said the motor was rebuilt and when i sent it back he replaced the head gasket and put a new radiator cap on. we have both ran out of ideas so any insight on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance,
steven

How's the radiator? Clean inside and out? Ans since the A/C condenser is in front of the radiator, is it clean? Is the cap the right pressure? Sorry for all the questions but I'm trying to narrow it down.

Message: Does it have clutch fan if so it may be slipping at low rpm. Radiator may need good cleaning and flushing.

Message: well they replaced the thermostat when the motor was rebuilt but i put a new one in it just to make sure.. and i replaced the clutch fan about 30-40000 miles ago so i hope thats not the problem. and now i had to get it towed about 60 miles because i couldnt drive more than 10 miles without having to pull over and add more coolant to it and the mechanic said it over heated until he added more coolant and then it cooled down.. but its always done it for me whenever i take trips 20+ miles so i told him he needs to drive it more. i just feel like there has to be a blockage somewhere because from what i understand there is a cycle where it goes from the resevoir to the radiator to the thermostat to the motor and back to the resevoir so it seems like something isn't allowing it to exit the resevoir and that makes it come out the over flow tube after i add extra coolant to the allen wrench bleeder nut that feeds straight into the motor....

Message: well we found alot of corrosion and a hole in the bottom of the timing cover which can mess up the flow of coolant.. so now we are in the process of replacing that.. cross your fingers! haha

Message: well after replacing the timing chain cover (the old one ended up having corrosion holes in it the size of quarters) we got it all back together and it is STILL over heating.. everyone is clueless what to do next? after trying new timing chain cover, engine overhaul, new headgaskets replacing ones put in for the rebuild, replaced thermostat that was installed in new motor, and replaced radiator cap we are all out of ideas. and the coolant is still coming out the overflow tube but not as bad yet..

Message: Yep, there is a blockage somewhere.
Make sure you have at least a 2 row radiator. Sometimes they put in a single row unit and it is borderline for even a 4 cyl.
A friend had the same problem with a 318 van. Found it had an OEM single row rad. Replaced it and no problems.

Message: yeah we just put in an oem cap from dodge that was rated 21 psi. yep the waterpump and t-stat were replaced when the timing cover was replaced.. i'm going to have the guy take the radiator off and try and run water through it, it just seems like it has to have a blockage in there somewhere because when you add water to the radiator cap after driving everything goes into the resevoir and doesn't go anywhere else and just spills over.

Message: I'll disagree with you on overheating being a common problem.
I've got an 00 Quad Cab that has never overheated in 170k
miles. Could be lack of proper maintenance or abuse.

Message: Because it didnt happen to "you" it's not a common
problem??? Interesting. Search Dakota overheating and see
how many of it IS effecting. You will see it IS a common
problem and very seldom an easy or cheap fix. For most of us
it's a matter of 1000 to replace the timing belt cover after first
spending other money hoping for the cheap fix.
Glad it's not been your experience though.
