Subject: 2000 4.7L sooty exhaust bad gas mileage IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 4.7L Quad Cab 4x4. My check engine light came on and I have started only getting about 8-9 miles to a gallon (down from about 17). I made the mistake of taking it to a mechanic who told me the O2 sensors were bad and needed to be replaced, this did not fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any idea how many O2 sensors there are?...mechanic told me 2 but that didn't seem right? Thanks in advance!

Message: First off, Is the CEL still on? If not check for codes anyway and post them here. You can check them yourself by turning the key on/off/on/off/on(by "on" I mean "on" not "start"). and the codes will display in the odometer as PXXXX and when it's finished or there were no codes it will display Pdone.
It could be the power steering pressure switch leaking into the wiring harness and causing a false O2 sensor code. It's been posted about on here before.

Message: The check engine light is still on. I tried the "on, off, on, off" technique but no codes popped up in the odometer...is there a certain number of times I have to do it, or a certain amound of time to wait between the on/off/on transition? If not I will have to take it to auto zone and get them to read it.

Thanks for the advise, I hadn't imagined that any of this was going to be easy. Do you think it would be better to just replace the O2 sensors as opposed to tring to clean them? I had thought about trying to clean the O2 sensors before but wasn't sure what to use, and the guy at Autozone had no idea...so break cleaner should do the trick?

Message: You do not need to clean the O2 sensors. Did you read all of my post?
You will need to change that power steering pressure. When you remove it, clean all of the power steering out of the wiring harness. Then disconnect the O2 sensor on that side and clean the connector. You can use contact cleaner which should not harm the wiring or connectors at all. You need to make sure they are thoroughly cleaned.
Install the new pressure switch and reconnect everything and you should be good to go. You can reset the PCM snd remove the codes by disconnecting the positive cable from the battery and turning the key to start for about a minute. Then reconnect the battery and start the truck up. It may idle a little a weird until the PCM relearns the idle settings.

Message: Brett,
Daddio has a good suggestion, as it happened some years ago to my 2000 4.7 liter. Took some time to figure out. Here is what happens:
Check you PS fluid reservoir. If it is low, the power steering high pressure switch blows, leaks fluid to the drivers side pre cat O2 sensor and fouls it causing issues like you have. I replaced the PS switch, cleaned the sensor with carb cleaner, and wiped fluid from wiring. No more issues, and good luck!
