I HAVE A 99 DODGE DAKOTA 5.2 107000 WHEN IT IDLES IT SQUEELS IN CORISPODANCE WITH THE BELT SO I TRIED TIGHTENING THE TENSIONER PULLEY AND THAT DIDNT WORK BUT....WHEN I TOOK VACUUM OF THE SYSTEM ITS STOPPED SQUEALING BUT SUCKS ALOT OF AIR FROM THE OIL CAP ANY IDEAS. I THINK ITS TO MUCH VACUUM MAYBE NOT ENOUGH WHAT COULD BE THE PROBLEM

The arm, pulley and now belt need to be

How are you taking Vaccum off? Are you disconnecting a certain hose? If so, which?

Get a piece of rubber hose, and use it as a stephescope (ugh, I know I spelled that wrong) to pin-point the sound's origin.

Pulling off a hose shouldn't stop a squealing noise that correspsonds to the belt unless it changes the idle speed.

Does it squeal when you drive? Turn on the truck and slowly raise the engine speed until the squealing stops (if it does) and note what the RPMs read when it does.

I have a 190k mile engine, and it squeals from time to time, sometimes more than others. I just either deal with it, or lube up the pulleys the best I can without getting it on the belt or the sides of the pulleys (the part that touches the belt).

Your tensioner could be going up, but you have the replace the whole unit (spring, bar, pulley), I'm pretty sure. Sometimes mine bangs around abit and the belt's echo in one spot reaches 1.5".

thanks for the input anymore ideas? i have noticed that the tensioner pulley is wore out but it does keep the belt tight, wich i just replaced 8000 miles ago. It just startd doing it .It stops squealing when i drive or its just that i cant hear it, but like i said when the motor is running at idle it squeals until i take of the oil cap wich then sucks in a ton of air and then the squealing stops until i put the cap back on. i am not sure if it is a belt. another sign is when i shut off the truck it stop but i can still hear the squealing 1 to 2 seconds after i shut it off almost like its trying to suck more air in somwhere

As posted above, you need to check your PCV system. But if its sucking air through the cap, then the PCV valve should be alright. The valve pulls the gasses out of the crankcase and into the intake, so if air is sucking in, its getting pulled out. (Actually, the valve doesn't pull it out, the vacuum from the intake pulls it through the valve)

If the PCV system is the same on that 318 as it is on mine, the PCV valve should be on the Left(driver) side of the engine, and the inlet filter should be on the Right(passenger) side, both on the valve covers. Clean the filter out, or replace it. Mine is a metal canister with steel wool, or Chore-Boy, in it.

If yours is similar, spray Brake-Clean into it until it runs clear, then let it sit for a moment; finally, pour some oil in there, and plug it back into the valve cover. It doesn't matter if you drown it with oil, it'll just seep into your valvetrain.



To double check that its squealing or not when you're driving, have the engine bay open while its running, and look at your throttle body. There is a lever on the side with a cable or few attached to it. Slowly rotate it and keep mind of how fast the engine is running and hear if the squealing stops.

Did you pin-point where the sound is coming from?

ok heres what i come up with im not much of a machanic but my dad is. he could not figure it out but he said my pcv valve is fine when the motor is cold it seema like it doesnt do it till it warms up and it stops squealing at about 1200 rpm its really bad when idling around 700 rpm

Alright,
So it either doesn't squeal or barely squeals when its cold, but as it warms up it's a very noticeable sound; while is sound is evident, as you raise the throttle to 1200 RPMs the squealing stops, along with a very prevalent noise at 700 RPMs.

Do I have that correct?

You still need to pin-point where the sound is coming from as best as you can. A length of rubber hose is more than helpful.

The best I can come up with right now is:
Your pulleys need lubed;
You have an outright bad pulley, and the centripetal force of 1200RPMs is making it spin nicely, but any lower and its dragging.

As your engine warms up, the metal expands. Plainly, your engine and its parts actually do get bigger as they heat up - not much, but enough.

Go over your pulleys nicely, and make sure your accessory bracket is on tight. I've heard mixed reviews about Belt Dressing, so it's your call if you want to try it.

But I stress again, do you best to pin-point the noise's location. It could make your life that much easier. Just watch out for that fan blade.

If your tensioner is bad you should change it. Either the springs get weak or the bearing on the pulley go bad. I have changed the pulley on the tensioner on my '00.

You could take the belt off and spin the Tensioner and Idler pulleys by hand to check for any roughness or wobble which would indicate a bad bearing.

Also, you mentioned the PCV. If you didn't buy a Mopar brand, go get one.

i looked over my truck chris been pretty helpful. yesterday my distributor cap broke and the rotor went out on it. like i said the squeeling continues. only when it warms up im still mixed on if it stops or not tonight it sounds like it stayed squeeling i pulled the oil cap of again and there was extreme suction on it almost hard to pull the cap off and as soon as the pressure all come off the cap the squeeling stops immediatly so i dont see how it could be a pully but like i said i not an expert but anymore ideas id appreciate it .

You should have some vacuum on the crankcase but not as much as you are describing.

I just had a thought.

What if the 'squealing' that you're hearing is just air being sucked through the oil cap when the cap in on? Through just a small crevice of it not sealing completely.

Maybe, as the engine revs up and creates more vacuum, it sucks the cap tight - and that's why the sound stops.

Regardless, your crankcase should NOT have that much vacuum. Is it a steady suction or does it putter? A really off the wall idea is a bad piston ring, or several; but I'd assume, as far-gone as that idea is, that it would putter if such was the case.

Fid out why you are sucking air into your oil cap. This is most likely the belly pan gasket on the intake manifold. Belt tensioners are cheap.
