Subject: Anyone got a Gibson Cat Back IP: Logged
Message: I have a question for all you guys that have Gibson Cat-backs on your 4.7L...Did you guys have to remove your spare tire to fit the exhaust system? The website says you have to remove the spare. If this is true...what is a good cat-back exhaust for the 4.7L without removing your spare tire? (I know this is a repeat, but I'm anxious!)

Message: You should be OK with the swept side system.
You will lose torque.
If you don't get the S/S system you will end up rusting out.
You could just change the muffler and save money and keep your S/S exhaust system.

Message: I have and it sounds sweet!
I went back and got the headers after the cat back, and it even sounds smoother than with just the cat back.
If I lost some torque I can't tell but then I don't tow anything, I just go 0 to 80 real fast when I get on the freeway.

Message: Thanks guys for your input. I wonder why the website states that I have to remove the spare...I trust you guys before the website. Oh, yeah, Handi, by-the-way the factory pipes aren't Stainless Steel, they are triple nickel plated chromium steel (chromoly) like a bicycle frame. But Dodge does give us Stainless Steel mufflers...supposedly they will last 100K+ miles (too bad it will be working fine in the trash can).
Again, thanks guys.

Message: I have the swept side single by Gibson 4.7 Quad Cab Auto. They claim 30 ft lbs torque INCREASE plus the horsepower (11 to 15 I believe). Did a Dyno before starting any mods but havn't had a redo dyno cause I'm not finished yet.
Have heard claims of strange idle and shifting with the 4.7 .... well, directly after the catback installation I noticed some strange shifting patterns. Seems like when you take your foot off the gas in drive there is no longer any restriction or compression slowdown, kinda like your coasting (just in overdrive), also up & down shifting at srange times .... mainly when in overdrive. Apparently the CatBack must have something to do with this ?????
Do notice a bit snappier, & pretty good sound but get some resonance in the cab ... mostly around 2 grand on the tac. Does sound sweet though ..... may not be loud enough for some of you younger dudes.

Message: P.S. Sorry, forgot the question. Don't have to remove the spare for a swept side single Gibson.

Message: I have a 01 dakota sport club cab 4.7 with the gibson dual split rear. i had a problem with the spare tire do to the hitch i put on. But if u dont have the hitch u can slide the tire back to fit the pipes. It sounds really good...just to an intake last week which makes it even better.

Message: How come the website says you need to remove the spare tire on 4x4's for the side swept system then? You guys who have put the systems in say it will fit, and i believe you, but theres gotta be some reason why Gibson says the tire needs to be removed. Thinkin of putting the system in, and this is the only issue thats holding me back.

Message: Keep in mind with my above message, I do not have a 4X4 ... I had no problem with installation on 2002 2 whl drive 4.7 Quad Cab Dakota. There was plenty of room for the side swept installation, was not even a question re: spare tire or having enough room.

Message: You guys might want to check the site again, only the split rear & dual sport systems require that you remove the spare tire, and that is only in certain circumstances. I went with the stainless swept side on my 2000 4x4 QC, and definitely didn't have any problems with my 31x10.50 spare.
Handi: They make a stainless swept-side so you don't have to worry about rusting. And, I didn't lose anything from installing it. It was all gain!
trim: I have to agree that the Gibson cat-back systems don't offer enough back-pressure to slow you down when you have overdrive on. No biggy though...it's one of the concessions you have to make. As for the shifting stuff, I haven't had any problems with weird shifting behavior. In fact, there are a lot of rolling hills out here that my Dak used to downshift to go up, and it doesn't anymore...cruises right up them in overdrive.

Message: If shifting is becoming a concern for you guys you can go to the dealer ship and they can set your camputer for the new exhaust so it will shift right.
