Subject: 3.9L to 5.2 or 5.9 engine swap IP: Logged
Message: hey guys, sad day for my dakota. After 139,1xx miles of abuse,
the 3.9 v6 began leaking antifreeze from a head gasket. She still
runs strong....for now, but i know its time is nearing.
The beast is a 2003 dakota 3.9L 4x4 5 speed SXT
My idea is to find a 5.2 out of something like a dodge 1500.
Apparently the 3.9 and the 5.2 are the same engine, +/- two
cylinders. Also, i believe they have the same bolt pattern as my 5
speed manual. If i'm wrong at any point from here, please, let
me know.
From this point, what sort of extra parts and such do i need? I
know i need something with the ECM, i'm not sure what though.
motor mounts? etc?
I'd also like to change the dashboard from 4 gauges (temp, tach,
speedo, fuel) to the 6 gauge dash that shows oil pressure and
such. I havent done my reaseach on that yet, but shouldnt it just
be plug and play?
Here's a twist. Could i swap the 3.9 for the 5.9? Will the
transmission hold up? will all parts play nice?
Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance

Message: The transmission from the 3.9L WILL hold up with a 5.2L engine as long as you don't go crazy and race or tow something huge. In your post you talk about the 5.2 first and at the end you say 5.9L .... the transmission will fail quickly from the power of the 5.9L and you will need a new torque converter to make it work right anyway. The motor mounts are the same but you will need a PCM for the 5.2 and you will have to wire the 2 extra injector plugs if you cant get the complete engine wire harness from the donor truck. New fan shroud will be needed as well.

Gee when did they start using a torque converter
on a manual transmission?

engine to run? (there's a quite a few at my friendly local junk yard)
I called dodge today and they said something about a wiring
harness....here's where i'm starting to get lost

5.9 considering my manual trans wont hold up. i'll go for the 5.2
I dont think i can use the old harness because i need two new wires
for fuel injection?

Message: You can use the old harness but you will need to add the 2 wires .... it all depends on how good you are at something like that and if yo can locate the pins for the connector. What you can do and I have done this before.... go to a u-pull it lot .... find a Dakota that still has the plug ends of the engine or body harness and remove the pins and a length of wire to use on your harness. you will just need to locate where in the connector they need to be added and which injector they are. not too hard if you take your time and think about it before you jump into it

Message: I have a factory service book for a 2001 dakota and so far it has matched up with my 2003 dakota. According to the book the pin location for cylinder 7 injector is #2 on the connector and #13 for cylinder 8. The connector SHOULD have tiny numbers on it you just have to look close. And all the injectors share the same wire for power and on my truck that is the DG/OR wire.

Message: I just did a 3.9 to 5.9 swap and adding the two injector wires was quite easy. I did get another harness as a spare and ended up removing what I needed and adding it to the V8. The throttle cable had a different end on it so I grabbed on from th junkyard. You will need a PCM from a V8 to run the injectors. As above you will need a V8 fan shroud and longer heater core lines. E-mail me if you have any other questions but this is not a hard swap. Good luck,
Mike

Message: My truck is a 1998, I used wires from another harness that already had the pins crimped on them. I have plenty of extra injector plugs and will send some to you if you want them. The PCM was 150 used off ebay and 350 reflashed by B&G Chrysler. V8 flywheel used $150, clutch $300, Throttle cable, fan shroud, and assorted junkyard items $80. Used 360 from craigslist $300. New oil pan for Dakota R/T (only use this if putting in 360) $120.
I suggest you stick with a 5.2 to avoid tranny problems and check with B&G on what year PCM's you can use and most likely they will come out of a Ram.

Message: Mike,
What tranny are you running with your 5.9 swap. Why do you recommend the 5.2 vs the 5.9 swap? I have a donor engine with the PCM, wiring harness and everything! I am thinking of trading up from my 3.9
thanks!

Message: The 5.2 and NV3500 trans came in Dakotas and 1/2 ton Rams. I used a NV4500 with a 5.9 stroker motor (408). Check on PCM, best bet is one from a 5.9 Ram 2003, not sure if a 4.7 PCM is compatible.
