Message:
I have a 97 dakota w/5.2L V8 4x4 automatic W/OD I need to replace rear axel. I have a 2001 dorango W/4.7 V8 automatic W/od that I have for parts. Can I swap rear axel from the dorango and put it in the dakota?I was also wondering if Can I use the almost new transmission from the dorango whenever the one in the dakota breaks. What other parts can I use that are worth saveing from the dorango? it has low miles but engen is distroyed thanks to my stupid employee who drove it way too hard.

Message: I think if you pull the wheels and measure the Durango rear from hub to hub it will be a bit wider than the Dakota; and the spring perches will be in a differnt spot. Easy enough to check with a tape.
As for the 4.7 Durango transmission, that will definitely not work with your 5.2.
What let go with the 4.7 engine ? They love revs compared to a 5.2. Tough to kill by pushing hard unless there was an underlying problem with something like cooling or lubrication.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: where are you located? I would like the engine if you have no plans for it.
Also I think kowalski is correct about the perches, but I am pretty sure if you have a welder you can just copy where your perches are on your truck and move them.

Message: Just a note the Durango is spring under and your 4X4 Dakota is spring over axle so spring perches need to be moved anyway. Durango rear frame is wider than Dakota thats why perches are too wide as well. Spring perches are cheap PN# P4120074 are only $14. The Durango axle is a big plus being the 12 bolt 9.25 vs the Dakota 10 bolt 8.25 that came with the 318 engine in most trucks of your year. Check axle ratio as well hopefully they match my guess is 3.55 Also note that the Durango probably has 16 inch wheels to accomodate the larger brakes. In my opinion I would rather have the Durango axle.
