Subject: 1991 Dakota 4WD problem IP: Logged
Message: I'm thinking about buying a 1991 Dakota but the guys telling me that it wont go into 4WD but it drives otherwise. He says he thinks its a vacuum line, but a friend of mine says that a 91 wouldnt have vacuum lines and that it could be a multitude of things, like: bad transfer case, cv axle, driveshaft, front axle, or spider gears. So I'm kinda stuck wondering. Any idea what it could be from any recalls or known problems from that year? And around how much would those things cost me? Thanks.
Just in case: its a 318 V8. How can I tell if its the LA motor or a Magnum? Should it have the badges on the fenders if its a Magnum or does that not matter?

Message: check fluid in transfer case if thats good drive it 5-10 miles, then stoped put it in nuteral shift in 4 hi (first notch down next is 4 lo) if it goes in and you cant get it out speed up a little with out stoping switch back to nuteral then ram the stick up into 2 weel drive again. if it does not go in in the first place probibly a bad transfer case these can be rebuilt though take it to some one who knows about dakotas to check it and if its a bearing or something they should be able to rebuild it (transfer case) for you this should not be terribly high. (price)
also the magnum has a stock air filter cover that should say MAGNUM on it and the magnum edition has no other badges other than V8 on the side finder panel. (TRANSFER TAKES REAR FLUID)

Message: Yes a 91 Dakota does have vacuum lines.
there are Vacuum lines to the Transfer case.
there are I believe Three near the back of the transfer case and there is a Vacuum regulator
that looks like a small black ball the size of a
softball. just above and behind the case bolted onto a cross member.
Check those lines.
But first check the transfer case for fluid.
You will need to remove the black ball
I mentioned to get to the fill plug.
It takes an 18mm or 7/8 socket.
Put your finger into the hole and you should get fluid on your finger.
If not then you need to fill it up then work it into and out of 4X4 till is works loose.
Been there done that.
