Anyone out there ever swapped a Dana 60 rear axle into a 97 or later 2wd Dak ? If you have what rear did you use, and were you able to avoid narrowing it. Also has the free search sight for the forums gone away. Thanks in advance.

Just a little bit of over kill for the truck. The 8 3/4 is a popular swap though.

What type of engine did you swap in? Dana 60 was common on 3/4 ton trucks. Not to mention muscle cars.

if its a late model it is a front dana 60, rear dana 70 or 80

although some of the 80s or so power rams had dana 61 front axles :-/

after a little research a dana 61 may be a good choice
large axle tube for abusing, not so much for a 2wd, but othert than that with a few parts you can run any dana 60 parts in them, and they are FAR cheaper than a dana 60

Using an old 440 with a 727 in a standard cab 97 Dak for a poor man's bracket car, but want a stronger rear, and the Dana 60's I see in the yards are not all that expensive

I would use an 8 3/4 out of an A or B body. Very close to the correct width. Very strong and would suit your needs.

It is a well known fact in the MOPAR racing arena, that the 8.75 is stronger than the 9.25.

While I don't care much for cowardly Howard's name changing antics and the misleading personal attacks he's made on a couple of us, it is true that the 8.75 rear has a better reputation than the 9.25. But as far as I know, the B body rears are too wide for the Dakota; and it should be mentioned that the A body rears would need to have the spring perches relocated. Axles with bolt patterns to match your vehicle are available in the aftermarket. Another point in favor of the 8.75 is the ability to easily swap gears just by swapping the pig out once the gears are set up. But Howard has accused me of not knowing what I'm talking about, so maybe he doesn't either ;-)

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I agree with the Ford 9". Tons of custom jobs out there. If you are looking at a budget axle, I would go with the 8 3/4 and just move the spring perches. You will be doing that with whatever go use other than factory axles.

For once Kowalski has shown intelligence and I will agree with his post supporting mine.

not that i wouldnt get a big raging hard on for a rockwell :-)
not much need for that in a 2wd though

oh how i would love to put some 2 1/2 tons under my truck with a massive custom lift and 54s :-)

For a juckyard unit, look under explorers and other ford trucks. The 8.8 is available with 31 spline axles, posi,(generic term ski)disk brakes, and low gears. Lots of aftermarket support and custom axles if you need them. Big plus is its much lighter than a 60. This is a populer swap with the 4x4 people on a budget. Get out your tape and start checking.
