Subject: electric fan IP: Logged
Message: 2000 4.7 auto QC -
Haven't been here in a while, truck has been running good which is a good thing. Turned 183,000 this week.
Anyway, been going back and forth to work no problems, air has been cooler here, but near end of trip if I push it hard it heats up to 210 maybe a little more, then cools back quickly when slowing or stopped. So I just ignored it.
But towing a trailer and one quad and 2nd quad in bed and running 70 up hills this last weekend got the temps clearly a needle width or so above 210. Stopped in a small town and it cooled down quickly (before I was in the town off the exit ramp).
I turned the A.C. on max with coldest setting and I do not see the electric fan turning. Is the electric supposed to run continuously with AC on max., regardless of engine temp? Fuse looked OK, swapped the relay with fog lamp relay (they had same part #), but still didn't work.
I guess I need some diagnostic help to check the fan. Where to start? Also does the electric fan help the cooling system stay cool when running it a little harder (is that the norm), or should the mech. fan be able to handle it by itself?

Message: The electric fan comes on for 2 reasons.
1) Demand for A/C ans engine temp above 130degF
2) Engine temp above 210 degF.

Message: So AC on max. and engine temp over 130 should run the fan?
It is not.
What is common to go bad, anything? What to check in what order - fuse - relay, then motor? Any other components.

Message: 1)Check fuse. 2)Swap with a known good relay then 3)unplug the fan from the harness and run some power from the battery to see if it starts then.

Message: You didnt state what year truck you have but i know the 99 that I had the A/C compressor would come on no matter what setting you had on. on my 03 there is a button to turn the A/C compressor off. Sounds like the pcm is trying to kick in the compressor clutch which also kicks in the electric fan unit by default.

Message: Removing the A/C relay will NOT keep the fan from coming on the fan is controlled by the PCM. All the A/C relay does is turn the compressor on and off. The PCM receives signal from the A/C,Heat controls in the cab.

Message: wvdak, on defrost mode the A/C is supposed to come on to remove moisture from the air. If you don't want the electric fan to come on you could remove the relay for it but, I advise against it.
If your truck is running 200 to 210 with that fan it will run hotter without it. Besides if you remove that relay if will probably trip the MIL.
The reason you may not be getting good heat is that the heater core may be clogged. Try backflushing it, that should help.

Message: Either that or you coolant/anti freeze level might be low. I had a Ranger that would blow out cold air due to low level of antifreeze.
