Subject: 95 Dakota - engine turns but no start
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1995 Dodge Dakota, V8, 5spd, 220k miles. I was replacing the radiator last week and it was running fine for testing. Then it suddenly stalled and would not start back up. Turns over, but not a single pop of the engine. After doing various checks for fuel and spark, the only thing that's seems off is the weak orange spark. I checked the ignition coil, and it is in spec with primary and secondary resistance. But can a coil still be bad even though resistance is within spec? What else can I look for? Cap and rotor seem fine, a little bit white on the contacts, but I cleaned them and still nothing.

Thanks for any help.

Did that before too. (Forgot to mention it.) Other than the code 12 from disconnecting the battery a long time back (and it's read that code for years now), there are no code errors coming up.

you might have a bad splice under the hood from your main relay
box. Unwrap the tape from the wires about 6-8 inches from the
relay box...you will noticed that a few wires from the ASD relay will
lead to a multiple splice, you might also have a fuseable link which
is a very flimsy thinner gauge wire.....i removed the fusible link
wire and replaced it with a thicker gauge, I also cut, and re
soldered all the splices (ASD, Fuel Pump)
hope it helps?

It ended up being the ignition coil. Even though the resitance of the windings checked out, the spark was weak and the coil was the culprit. The cap and rotor got replaced too, for good measure. Running great again...
