Message: My mom picks up her Patriot Blue Durango SXT 4.7 on Monday and next time I visit the folks I want to do some things on the 4.7. However since it is her car and she doesn't really care about HP, I want to keep it somewhat mild. How would I put in a K&N drop in and still modify/upgrade the intake performance, any silencers, restrictive parts in the factory intake???? Any help/suggestions would be great
what color blue is Patriot Blue anyway????

Message: Patriot Blue is a really dark blue.
There is a black box right on top of the intake that the air flows through, that is very restrictive and has silencers in there.

Message: After she gets the new Durango take off the "air hat" on top of the throttle body and you will see that it is not restrictive at all. It does have a silencing chamber but is actually just a molded in full size 90 degree bend. The 4.7 will lose torque with any intake and exhaust modifications. You will be wasting your money. Just like I did.

Message: Handi: Get a TB make over or a new TB. You'll get that torque back. I got a fastman TB and gained lots of torque back.

Message: does anyone know of the "black box" juniork is speaking of, is it easy to "remove", is it worth it or loss of low end torque like I've been hearing, I may just initially go with a K&N drop in and forget the rest
Should I still take off the rubber radiator flap on the side of the engine bay where the intake is located????
Should I remove the "silencer"????? above the intake???

Message: For now if you are hesitant about anything just take the horn off the air box(where air enters the engine). This pops right off. Take the rubber flap off. Get a K&N drop in. Anything is better than stock. Down the road if you get curious then experiment with what ever. You'll figure things out just from toying with it a little.

Go to this thread. Lots of really good ideas for under $100. Its up to you though...its your money. Personally I wouldn't go with the airiad. But thats me.

Message: CThomp,
Thanks for the link, I remember reading that thread when it was going on. I too have heard not great things about Airaid, maybe it was they were built badly, false claims, etc. I know K&N is tried and true, just the Airaid looks a lot better with the heatshield, etc. Why are you not a fan?? What is the best way to remove the rubber flap, On my dad's Ram I just ripped it off, there's got to be a better way. Thanks again!!

Message: I just never heard great things about airaid intakes. I've got a 360intakez that i'm about to modify so that the K&N will go underneath the cruise control cable thats really in the way. I'm probably just going to add a 45 deg ABS extension to the end of the tube. Should be really simple. I think the rubber flap either just pops off or unscrews. My truck didn't come with one. Some didn't.

Message: I threw an Airaid in my Dak a couple weeks ago. Sounds pretty nice, but it sucks because I lost my low end torqe. Cant chirp em anymore. No notice in MPG. Get a nice pull at 3500rpm though.
Switching to K&N's FIPK when they come out with it.

Message: CThomp- just move the cruise controller's bottom screw over, theres already a hole there.
handi2- I didn't lose any torque with a 360AirIntakez. Generally you lose torque when you open up the exhaust, not the air intake (although to totally benefit from the opened up air intake you need to open up the exhaust-for what its worth).

Message: It just seeems like the Airaid would be a better option since it alters the factory intake setup with a heatshield, cone filter, etc. Normally I would definitely take the drop in route but that guy on here selling Airaids for $100 and I can buy a six month old one from a guy I know for like $70, in ya'lls opinion does that make the Airaid the better option, or do they just really suck that bad????

Message: You'll get the same performance for far less money. You might even get a little better with a creative drop in setup. Get rid of the air hat and replace it and the tube to the air box with some ABS plastic elbows. That'll give you a less restrictive route for the air.

Message: Im no mechanic, but I do know some basics...and I cant see how adding an intake would cause low end loss. Its just more/cooler air at the engines disposal...now I can understand how a bigger less restrictive exhaust system would cut down on low end due to reduced back pressure. The air is there for the engine to use..if it needs it it takes it...its not like its ram air....
In all honesty, I installed an IP z tube and didnt notice any difference..better or worse..just sounds and looks better

Message: The only way to lose power on the intake side is to change the intake runners on the intake manifold itself, otherwise you just add cold air and more of it with the intakes. Exhaust I can see maybe losing a little torque, but if you remove that third cat like I did, you actually gain some decent HP numbers and a bit of torque. And as for barking tires, I have an auto transmission, but when I shift it manually, I can light them up in first and part way into second. Whoever stated that you can't even bark the tires anymore may have done something else to cause that to happen, but it's not from the intake or exhaust.
