Message:
I suppose this is more of a general question, but I
will ask it here. What are the ramifications or
potential problems of exceeding the maximum towing
capacity by 20 or 30 percent? It would be hard on
the engine, transmission, and brakes, but if it
doesn't overheat, burn the brakes, or flatten the
springs, is it acceptable to do on a limited basis?
Is it something you could get by with doing once in
a great while, or is it something that should never
be done?

Yes it is ok! Beat the truck in to the ground then remember to replace your engine and tranny.

Gilberttribe - one possible ramification is a leagal one - you'll be screwed if you hit anything and they catch you overweight. That said, a couple of members have towed heavy - one by around 25%; I suspect the other was similar. Specifics on your truck and trailer would help. Both members had the higher 3.55 gearing that limits the stock rating and had replaced that with 4.10 and 4.56 gears - ratios lower than anything offered stock for their generation. Ratings for mopar's 3.92 trucks are higher. Both had mildly modified engines. It would be important to be sure tires and suspension weren't over their weight ratings; and that shouldn't be achieved by redistributing the trailer load to be less than 10% on the tongue. That could result in a dangerously badly behaving trailer. With a tail wag that could push you right off the road. They also did it in a way that would not be harder on the brakes; making sure the trailer could handle it's own braking. It would be pretty stupid to do if it meant an increased load on your brakes.
Talking once in a great while, as you say...

Search for it yourself if you like, I'm not here to do busy work for trolls. Maybe you should have offered the poster some advice yourself if you don't like mine. But you are just here to hassle people; not to help.

I believe it is worth warning someone about.

It's not wise to overload you tow vehicle too much. If I wasn't going far or staying on mostly flat terrain I would do it occasionally. BUT-some states license trucks by gross vehicle weight.
My 92V6 reg cab long bed is licensed for 6k lbs.
The 92 V8 ext cab is licensed for 12k lbs. I bought it to tow a small boat and figured if the truck is 4k # and the boat is more than 2k# which is well within the towing capacity, well...I'm illegal.

You need to look at your truck-what gears and engine and then brakes-9.25" rears or the larger ones. V6 or V8?
Use yer noggin and you should be okay.

I've towed things with vehicles that should never hve been on the road. The item being towed was bigger and weighed more than the tow vehicle, which wasn't set up for towing.
It got pretty hairy at times.

No, I just hate liars. Especially cowardly anonymous ones. So confident in your claim about BS that you are afraid to post it under your usual screen name ? It must suck to live in fear like that. You'd have to be stupid not to be concerned about the repercussions if you caused an accident and hurt someone because you were knowingly towing dangerously overweight. Another concern here would be not to overload the weight rating of your receiver.
