Subject: 4.7L vs. 5.9L IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone, I am looking at getting my first truck, a 2000-04 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. I have been looking at a lot of trucks and the only trouble I am having is deciding on whether to get the 4.7L or the 5.9L V8. I have driven both of them and they seem to have plenty of power. I do not do much hauling and want to get the best MPG's I can. I am leaning towards the 4.7L but figured I should talk to you guys first to see if you had any recommendations. Thanks.

Message: Why badmouth people about "castrating" their trucks when you are looking for advice ? Are you aware that some of them might think you are castrating your truck by adding the extra weight and loss of turning radius of a quad cab ?
But the answer to your question is a no brainer - if the concern is best fuel milage, the 4.7 is better than the 5.9.

Message: That's not always true i have a 99 dakota with a 5.9 5 speed and it gets great gas believe it or not usually 18 cruising or sometimes 20 at long trips. My brother has a 4.7 dakota same as mine and it gets about 5 or so less not sure how that worked out but we both have 31 10.50 tires and same k&n intakes

Message: Most likely due to differences in driving style, roads, and possibly gearing. If the comparison is exactly the same truck and the same driver, the 4.7 should be expected to get better milage. Congratulations on the remarkable milage you say you are getting from your 5.9.

Message: Yeah thanks and i have drove it the same places i do myn and it seems pretty much the same as geared wise but the only thing i can figure is there could be something wrong somewhere int he system and that maybe the 5.9 just doesnt have to work at all to pull the light truck

Message: Go with the 5.9
There is no replacement for displacement :-)
Plus performance mods are plenty available for the 5.9

You know its funny how the know it all Gerrick Doherty (aka Kowalski) missed that one.
The only V8 that came with a 5 speed manual was the 5.2 (318) not the larger 5.9 (360) engine opt. for the Dakota.
Brandon.
If you looking for just the Avg. MPG I will tell you that you're best choice would be the smaller 287 cube motor. But as for HWY millage there's not too much of a difference.

Message: If it is a Dak, any Dak with a 5.9/ 5spd manual combo is a one of a kind. Better hang on to it.
Have you had to replace the tranny yet? I wouldn't think that the NV3500 would hold up very long behind a 5.9. And since the NV4500(which is used in the 5.9 Ram)wouldn't fit in a Dak without some serious modifications it wasn't installed in a Dak from the factory.

Message: No the only problem i have had is sometimes like when i pull up to a stop sighn and i let off the throttle it will die but i had the ports cleaned and it hasnt done it but maybe once in the last several months, but i bought it when it had about 20,000 on it from a little car dealership and they didnt know a whole lot about it so it may not be factory but the had to do a good job at it because you couldnt tell if it was an auto

Message: That's a heavy truck for a 3.9. He would probably be better off with changing gears if he doesn't do a lot of highway traveling. In town, if he went to say 4.10:1 gears, he would probably see an increase in mileage. If he made it breath better, intake and exhaust mods, that would probably help. My '00 QC 4x2 3.9 5spd gets about 18-19 in town and 24 on the hwy.

Message: The gear info should be on a tag in the glove box, and also on the rear.
How have you identified the 5.9 in your truck ?
It is more likely a 5.2.

Message: I had a 5.9 5spd in my '93. It wasn't stock, but a GenII reg cab 2x4 with a 5.9 and 5spd could really haul ass. Sold it back in July when I bought an '06 QC 4x4. Can't wait to be able to drive in the snow this winter.
Anyway, I have the 4.7HO now, it's puts out more power than a stock 5.9 and gets better gas, but the 5.9 has much more potential with mods.
