One important consideration for winter tires (anyplace that sees a real winter) is the width of the tires. Too wide a tire will float over snow without traction. Regardless of brand, I'd advise no wider than a 235 for good snow traction.

I don,t know what you are smoking but here in the northern midwest we run 255 and bigger with no problem with snow traction. Sounds like your stuck in a local weather mindset. You need to drive in others states once in a while.

Hi Henry - I see you are posting under another name once again and are only here to hassle me. You obviously don't have as much experience in snow as I do if you think different width tires work differently depending on what state you are in. Narrower tires get better traction in the snow because there is more weight per square inch of contact area.

Wow, you see enemys everywhere now. You owe Bob big time cause it wasn,t me. Now your being rude to strangers. Libs. Sense I,ve been aquisted of hassling you, I might as well really jump in. Every snow fall is different. Grain size, air temp, ground temp,est. As far as working in snow- I,ve pushed snow in alaska with an oshkosh heavy truck. I,ve used an oshkosh with a snowblower in the U.P. And i,ve crossed colo. in the dead of winter. I,ve seen snow.. You are stuck in one mindset(no surprise there) with your narrow tires. We don,t have problems with traction with bigger tires in heavy snow. I,ve run 31-10.5s for years -no problem. The tire manuf.s will tell you the same. Many farmers out here will also tell you the same. big tires work for us. Just balance the weight and get to work. If you can,t get them to work for you-tough...

Tire manufacturers will tell you a wider tire hydroplanes more easily in rain; the physics involved is similar for snow. Most of us are probably already aware that every snow fall is different, that has nothing to do with the general advice I offered here. Bottom line - Some will do okay with wider tires, they would do even better with narrower ones.

I like my Cooper Discoverer M/S in winter. They have the little mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall so they are snow and ice rated. Go to www.coopertires.com and have a look at them.
