Subject: Mechanics can't solve noise IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 RT and when I had a Flowmaster 40 series muffler put on I noticed when you drive over a bump or the exhaust shakes a bit it squeeks. It sounds like it's coming from one of the manifolds is rubbing but both have been replaced. The heat shields aren't rubbing and all clamps are tight. Speedy muffler had it all day and $500 later still didn't know what it was. It's driving me insane cause it's annoying as hell. any ideas?

Message: 1. Get on your back and slide under.
2. Starting at the discharge end of the exhaust pipe, grab the exhaust in different places and try to shake it. Up/down/left/right/fore/aft.
3. If you hear it squeak, follow the noise.
4. If you don't hear a squeak, move to a different spot and try again.

Is this Speedy Muffler place the one that installed said muffler? If so, You paid someone 500 bucks for a squeak? I'd either want some of my money back or force them to fix it properly.

Message: we had it up on a lift and shoke it and it sounds like the noise is coming from were the exhaust splits at the front. all hangers are tight and nothings rubbing either. Speedy said the only thing they can do is take the whole exhaust apart($$$$).

Message: As I asked previously, Are they the ones that installed your Flowmaster? If so, they should work on it until you're satisfied without any extra out of pocket $$$$. If they did the install and it didn't squeak before, THEY are at fault.

Message: Yeah, it doesn't seem like we are getting the whole story here. The original post seems to imply that Adam paid speedy $500 to look for a squeek. He'd have to be crazy to pay 500 just for that, and not have it fixed. If it is just the pipe connection squeeking, it could be welded.

Message: the whole story has nothing to do with the problem. The truck went into Speedy and had the muffler put on and posi oil changed. When I got it back the noise started so I took it right back. They tried changing to manifolds added a solid clamp and checked if anything was rubbing. It still wasn't fixed and my bill was already $500 and I didn't want them taking the exhaust apart.

Guess what, It Does!
You failed to say that speedy were the ones that installed the new muffler!
All you did say was (and I quote)
"Speedy muffler had it all day and $500 later still didn't know what it was"
Pretty simple here...
If the noise wasn't there before they put the muffler on then guess what?

Message: $500 to look is excessive. I paid $550 for a custom fabricated full dual exhaust straight from the exhaust manifolds. This included two cats, two mufflers and two chrome tips. That was in 1996 though. What a deal that sounds like now!
This thread sounds like it needs to go to The People's Court. haha
