Subject: unable to start engine

Message:
Ya my brother has given me responsibility of his vehicles while he is serving his second tour in Iraq, before he left he was on leave, and his 1995 408 stroker dakota died on him causing him to get it towed home, he didn't have enough time to fix it before he left, I have some knowledge in auto mechanics, he said it may be the Engine computer, ignition, or the fuel injectors, so far all I know when I try to start it I just get a clicking noise, and the engine doesn't turn over.

How about some specifics about how it died on him ? If it died while running, then wouldn't turn over as you say - the first thing I'd do is put a wrench on the crank to see if it will turn over by hand. It might be seized. There is no way a problem with fuel injection would cause the truck not to turn over. Also extremely unlikely an ignition problem would cause that too - it would have to have a short bad enough to discharge the battery.

If you're trying to start the truck and just get a rapid "clicking" sound, First thing I'd do is check the charge on the battery. Then if it is fully charged and still doesn't turn over, put a wrench on the crankshaft and try to turn it over by hand.

Could be when "it died" is that the voltage regulator went out and killed the battery.

Well I did try the advice you guys gave me, and in the end I put in the battery from my Dad's Dak into it and now the engine will rotate, but it won't start, it sounds like it wants to. So anymore info would be appreciated.

Next Step: Check for spark then check for fuel. A gas need needs three things to run, spark, fuel and air.

Keep us updated.

Place key in, Turn ignition and the press on gas then fire it up. If that doesn't work pure some Alcohol down the intake manifold (about a bottle) and then see what happens.

Alcohol works very well when bong smoking. Just pure it in the tube with what ever you got "mixes it" and smoke it!!

Peace!

P.S and come see me down in Martin TN! It's going to be A "Bong" of a party.

There's a good chance it's the splice

I wouldn't recommend that alcohol thing. It'll totally remove any piston ring-to-cylinder wall lubrication. And gasoline engines don't compress fluid very well.
But if you give it a short spray of starting fluid in the intake and it fires up then dies, it's fuel related. If it never fires and just turns over, it's probably ignition related.

Yes the fuel pump primes, I believe it is ignition related, I have spark, I have fuel and I sure as heck have air.

An electrical problem could be possible; but you said it won't turn over. Is that what you meant ? Or do you mean it will turn over, but not start ? Not much reason to think a motor that won't turn over would be ignition related - especially if you have spark.

Well the battery was pretty much dead so it wouldn't turn over, and just made a rapid clicking noise, but i switched it out with the one from my Dad's Dak and then it would turn over but wouldn't start, my bro said it could be the computer because he kept it from the old block 318 Magnum, and put in a 360LA block stroked out to 408. So if I have to replace it I may end up putting a carb on it.

Have you tired checking for any codes? It sounds like it could be electrical. Not necessarily the PCM.

Well I just got done trying to boost the battery that was for this Dak, but it wouldn't hold a charge. I also checked for codes and I got a 3 3 7. which was weird cause I thought you get an 8 8 when it starts and a 5 5 when it ended, but it starts out 3 pause 3 pause 7 pause 5 pause 5 pause.

It should be 1 flash pause 2 flashes(start of codes) then (if no codes) 5 flashes pause 5 flashes.

That does not sound like it would give a no start problem. You'll need a good batetry to troubleshoot this problem though. Could be the (I think) #115 splice just below the PDC on the drivers inner fender. It's about 6 inches below and has 1 wire spliced to 3. Re-do that splice if it hasn't been done already.
