Subject: voltage regulation IP: Logged
Message: I have 2002 dakota with 4.7L auto. While driving at highway speeds, my volt meter on the dash went all the way to the high side, the check gauge light came on. I was in the middle of no where at midnight so I kept driving. The headlights were flickering constantly. Once off the highway, the volt meter returned to normal. When I got home, turned off the truck and it would not restart. Next day, I took the alternater for testing, it was good. The parts counter guy says the voltage regulation is done by the ECM. Can anyone confirm this? Is there a way to test or verify I have an ECM problem. Could it still be an alternator problem??
Thanks in advance for any help.

Message: I am not sure how to test it but, the voltage regulator is built in to the PCM.

Message: True story.
The PCM does it all, based on electrical needs and battery temp. The battery temp sensor is under the battery.

Message: Thanks for the response. can a bad battery temp sensor cause it to overcharge? I've continued to drive the truck with no repeat of the problem.
