Subject: 4.7 Head question IP: Logged
Message: I just bought a 2001 4.7 with overheating problems. The person I bought it from did a leakdown test and all cylinders were 90-95% except #1 and #2, which were around 40% each. It is kind of odd that the first cylinder on each head had that problem, but i'm guessing both heads are warped.
My question is, I bought this truck to fix the heads and be a reliable driver with 80k miles on it. Are these trucks known for timing chain issues? I am debating on replacing the timing chains when I do the head for insurance down the road. Would it be worth the extra work right now or is it not a big deal until it has more miles on it?
Thanks

Message: If you are going to keep it for awhile and you already have a few miles on it (90K +), I think you should replace the chains, gears and tensioners. They aren't cheap but you gotta take it all off anyway. Its cheap insurance and free labor. If you do it later, it will be a pain. Depending on the number of miles, you might think about the oil pump.

Message: They are noted to develop a little stretch and if it gets bad enough you hear some noise and they can break and that will be bad. I would replace em and at the same time throw in the HO cams from the jeep cherokee's. But that is just me. Have fun.
