Subject: Clicking Sound on 02 Dakota IP: Logged
Message: Guys,
I noticed when I turn on my engine it makes a clicking sound under the hood. It goes off when I turn off my engine. It's still there when I am driving it.
It's not really a clicking sound, but that's the only way I can describe it. It's kind of like clicking mixed with electric voltage sound. I just recently had the transmission replaced.
Any ideas?

Message: Sounds like its the canister purge solenoid ... check to see if a vacuum line came loose from the intake manifold and check all of the other lines even a cracked line can cause that thing to be screwy.. you didn't say what year but i know on my old 99 it was mounted to the firewall just to the right of the manifold.... on my '03 R/T its almost under the battery/relay box it has two vacuum lines on it alond with a two pin harness connector

There is a solenoid mounted to the firewall that makes a clicking noise like a loose rod or main bearing. I noticed this noise after buying my 2000 dakota 4.7 and took it back to the dealer. They accepted it because the receptionist heard it too but called me that afternoon to tell me it was normal. When I went to pick it up, the mechanic showed me. I bought it in March 2000 and still hear it occasionally today. For a mechanic, it is somewhat unnerving but hasn't had any negative affect in almost 10 years. I still don't like it tho.

Message: Roadrunner... if you let the dealer tell you that then they took you for a ride. The evap purge solenoid should NOT be clicking.

Message: +1 Forseti. My '00 has 106k on it and I have never once heard that Evap Purge solenoid.
