4800,5300 gets about the same fuel milage and also with the right cam. The smaller 295 would put out just as much toruqe as the 5300 at the same HP setting.
So in theory it should be 4800,6000,6200 or even better bring back the big block 496 cid motor.

GM killed the 8.1 in the light dutys (still available in kodiac and top kick) for several reasons
1) emissions
2) low popularity
3) emissions
a 396 motor rates at 340 hp
THAT is some serious de-tuning
Much like the 8.0 v-10 dodge offered until 2003
310 hp? but it had like 400 tq
i think they killed it off because of popularity and because the diesel started getting better hp and tq

The V10 had 450 tq
The reason why is because it was a gas hog just like the big block Form GM. Also your right you can't justify low ratings like that from such as big engine.

i think this whole thing is refering to the engines in stock form. with the right cam alot of things can happen. why chose a smaller engine when the bigger one with more low end gets the same mileage?
the 4.8 is basically a cheaper way to have a v8. i think many people can appreciate those kind of options. i like chevys engine lineup the best because you have so many levels so to say... its kind of nice to be able to have a v8, but not necesarily have to have one that will tear the world down too, with the mileage that comes with it.

Well you see people buying Dodge trucks because the think owning a Hemi is cool (not saying it isn't). Some people just like the extra power because if you need it, it's there.
Let’s not forget that the smaller 4.7L puts out as much torque as the larger 5300! So it’s really what you put in it that counts.
